Literacy is a human right

Literacy is the foundation of a thriving society. It supports personal, community and country- wide prosperity and cultural understanding. Our mission is to lift literacy skills to ensure whānau, workplaces and communities reach their full potential.

Literacy strengthens Aotearoa

Literacy strengthens family and community connections. By teaching essential literacy skills, we create a brighter future for all New Zealanders.

Happier families

Literacy opens doors to better job opportunities and personal growth.

Thriving communities

Communities thrive when individuals collaborate, and contribute effectively.

Safer workplaces

Higher literacy rates lead to a more skilled, safer workforce and increased productivity.

Stronger country

Literacy fosters community engagement and enhances overall quality of life for everyone in Aotearoa.

A learner celebrating her success

One in four adults in New Zealand experience literacy difficulties - more than 1.25 million people!

For some, it’s struggling with the Road Code to get their driver licence. For others it’s reading a health and safety sign at work. Or following written instructions. Or helping kids with homework. Or doing online banking. Low literacy is a burden.

By strengthening adults’ ability to listen, speak, read, write, work with numbers and computers, we help unlock their social, cultural, and economic potential. This empowers them to participate fully in their whānau, workplaces, and communities.

We treat literacy as a fundamental human right and the bedrock of personal freedom, lifelong learning, and collective wellbeing.
