We are confronted daily with tables and graphs in newspapers, on application forms, on television and the internet. Sometimes we need to interpret the information in graphs or tables in order to plan for something, to buy or apply for something, or to go somewhere, e.g. reading a bus / train / movie timetable or completing a table in a catalogue to buy goods.

On a broader scale, information from the Census tells us about the people living in our country and allows us to reflect on ourselves as individuals and our families to see how we ‘fit’ with the information presented.

This resource is based on the 2006 Census information (released 2007) provided on the Statistics New Zealand website:  http://www.stats.govt.nz/census/

The Census resource contains five parts and can be used in its entirety over a number of sessions, or in parts relevant to your students. If students have shown broad prior knowledge during Part One (Discussion), you may choose to leave out Part Two, reading ‘Census Vocabulary’ or ‘About Census’ and continue with Part Three if the focus is on tables and graphs.
