6. Call for Workshops for National Planning Hui 2012:
Planning has begun for this year’s Hui ā Tau and National Planning Hui. As Te Kōruru signalled in Kokiri!, - the Here turi kōkā (August) 2011 issue – this year’s National Planning Hui will focus on the Kaupapa, Strategic Goals and core values of Literacy Aotearoa, as we celebrate our 30th birthday.
The theme for the National Planning Hui is Kaupapa: Walk the Talk, and the three Kaupapa strands to be addressed by Keynote Speakers and workshops within this approach are:
1. Te Tiriti o Waitangi;
2. Student Centred;
3. At No Direct Cost: rights-based education and social justice.
This is a call for workshop proposals that will:
a) Inform Hui participants on practice, or
b) Report on research
in any of these three topic areas. It would be good if the workshops offered targeted particular groups, namely tutors, managers or governance.
Your ideas re names, contact details and profiles of proposed workshop presenters, and your comments on their likely contribution to the theme, will be gratefully received.
Please complete the Abstract Form attached to this issue of Quickchat and send it to Barbara Menzies (barbara@literacy.org.nz) by 31 Poutu te rangi (March) 2012. Your suggestions, profiles and comments will be reviewed at that stage and we will contact you for further information as required.
7. Literacy and Numeracy Unit Standards:
The Literacy and Numeracy unit standards are a part of the National Certificate in Employment Skills (version 13), and form the alternative pathway to meet the NCEA level 1 literacy and numeracy requirements. Information and resources to assist organisations with planning, implementation, assessment and moderation of these standards is available at www.nzqa.govt.nz/literacy or www.nzqa.govt.nz/numeracy .
In the week of 13 Hui tanguru (February) 2012, further clarifications and annotated exemplars for the Literacy and Numeracy unit standards were published, along with information about how the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Tool can contribute evidence towards the standards. Assessed Work cover sheets - which must be used for submissions for national external moderation - and evidence collection sheets are also available at the above web addresses. These have been updated to improve their usability.
In Poutu te rangi (March), the annotated exemplars first published in 2011, which are being re-annotated to clarify the commentary, will be reissued.
8. Review of MMP:
This year we all get the opportunity to have a say on changes we'd like to see on the way our MMP voting system works. The review comes out of the 2011 Referendum on the Voting System, when the majority of voters chose to keep MMP. You can find out more about the review at: http://www.mmpreview.org.nz/why-review. If you want to find out how you can have your say on the way we elect our Parliaments in the future, go to: http://www.mmpreview.org.nz/have-your-say.
You can see what other people are saying at: http://www.mmpreview.org.nz/have-your-say/submissions-received

2. Now from the menu on the left select Quick Access Toolbar.
3. In the Choose commands from box select All Commands.
4. Now scroll through the list of commands until you find the Speak feature. Select it and then click the Add button.
5. Click OK.
The speak feature will now appear in you Quick Access Toolbar at the top of your screen. When you want to use this feature simply highlight the text you would like to hear and click the button. To see a video of this tip in action click here.

Kia ora, my name is Kelly. I came from Yi Chang China to Auckland for study in 2001. After that, I went to Dunedin to study my Accounting Degree. Because Dunedin is a university town, the atmosphere is different from other places. I had a wonderful three years student life there.
After I graduated, I was so lucky to get a Receptionist Position in the Adult Reading Assistance Scheme (ARAS) in Christchurch. I worked there for more than three years. The Manager Maureen, other staff and tutors helped me a lot with my English, my life, and everything really. I am really appreciative. Thank you everybody in ARAS.
Now, I have been very lucky again, gaining the Accounts Position at Literacy Aotearoa in Auckland. I like numbers, so I am very pleased to get this position. Thank you Julie and Thanee for giving me the chance. Managers and other colleagues are very friendly here. It is a very busy office and a nice family. Also I have found there is a real summer time here, lots of shops and beaches and no more earthquakes!
3. Update - Starting Points Assessment Resource Kits:
Great news! This week Learning Media advised us that the Starting Points Assessment resource kits have been distributed to Ngā Poupou. As your Poupou begin using these kits, your feedback to their usefulness and the quality would be welcome and appreciated.

2. TaDa 2012:
In TaDa, you are required to enter the periods in yourself. For 2012, this is what needs to be done:
1. On the main Menu, click on ‘Characteristics’.
2. In the next screen, make sure ‘Characteristics’ is ticked then click OK.
3. A Pop-up will appear, click on the drop down list, scroll down, and select ‘Period’.
4. In the Period table, look for 01 Jan 2011 to 31 Jan 2011, highlight and copy the Characteristic Value for this and scroll down the bottom and paste the value into the empty field.
5. In the new field, change both 2011 to 2012.
6. Repeat the process for the rest of the year.
Tips:
1. For every field, there is a tick box against it called ‘Current’. If the field is ticked, the month will appear in the Period drop down list right through the system, e.g. Adding SDH, Edit SDH. If the tick is removed, the month will not show in the drop down. You can use this to control the number of periods you want to see in the Period drop down list. Note: you can always tick a month that has been un-ticked if you want the month to reappear in the list again for say historical reporting.
2. You can use the Sort Order column to control the order of appearance in the period drop down list. Suggestion: Enter 01 to 12 for January to December of the current year and for historical months, enter z01 to ….., to fix the order you want the period to appear. Once done, when you select period drop down, the current year will always be at the top in the month order, saving you scrolling to look for the month you want.
